How does a Manual Transmission Work?

A manual transmission is a type of vehicle transmission that uses gears and levers to shift gears. Manual transmissions are most commonly found in cars, but they can also be found in trucks, buses, and motorcycles. A manual transmission requires more finesse than an automatic transmission, which is why they're usually used in vehicles with higher levels of performance or luxury.

Manual transmissions use a clutch to engage and disengage the gears. When the driver shifts their foot to the gas pedal, the engine RPM goes up. This causes the clutch to release from the gear it's engaged in and allows the next gear to be selected.

There are two main types of manual transmissions: torque converter and direct drive. Torque converters use a series of planetary gearsets to change rotational motion into linear motion. Direct drive transmissions use a single shaft that turns directly inside an oil bath (known as a torque converter).

 Types of manual transmissions

There are three types of manual transmissions: manual, automatic, and dual-clutch. Manual transmissions use gears you shift yourself using your hands and feet. Automatic transmissions use gears that are automatically selected by the computer, but you can manually override the computer's decision by shifting into "drive" or "reverse."

Dual-clutch transmissions combine the features of both manual and automatic transmissions, allowing you to shift manually or automatically but also using two separate clutches that work together to let you gear up or down quickly.
